The Year 2008: When Computer Games and Politics Entered Crossfire

It's mid-2008 and recently released game media has risen more and more political discussions over forums and news groups. Initially, back in the 2007 game violence was defined by politicians as a weapon used against gamers.

"Games with disturbing content such as blood can provoke users to violence."

Now, those same politicians are trying to make games look with a political message.
  • Fallout 3
In May, Bethedesta Softworks found itself in a chilling situation as one of the artworks for a future release (Fallout 3) has been used on an Al-Qaeda private forum, as reported by The SITE Intelligence Group. The artwork represents a drawing of Washington, DC after a massive nuclear attack.

The most interesting part was the initial reaction of the general public. While most gamers were horrified, by the situation the company has fallen into, some posted rather aggressive comments towards the developer accusing them in terrorist activity.

Either way, it's not the news media's fault, neither the company-developer.
Be advised: as games have past our time and go into the feature, more and more of them will be used for political propaganda by various groups and politicians. Do NOT listen to them.

And lets not blame only the terrorists group in action and have a look over another gaming headline.
  • Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots
The latest installation of the world-known series has been put under question for "a message about American domination". We all know that since the US military have the biggest/advanced army they are part of almost every major FPS action release.

Now, due to the tension between USA and Iraq, the developers of MGS4 have been accused for political messages.

"...fans are exchanging rhetorical fusillades on the Internet, teasing out what the underlying political and philosophical messages of Metal Gear Solid 4 might be."
(Quote taken from the NY Times)

A conclusion on who could have started those discussions cannot be made. Only thing made for sure is that it's the power of various nations that inspire computer games, not the computer games who inspire the power of nations.

Interesting fact: The only game released so far with political message (like "We are great!") is America's Army: Operations. The initial purpose of the game was to show who are the good guys and how they do, so that USA Army could recieve an increase in recruits and overall rating.

Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter gameplay movie

Gameplay footage from Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter. I like the music that has been chosen for the video and some of the scenes in the middle and the end of it. Good beginning, too.
